Newcomer performing arts outfit Noir Dance Theatre (NDT) is putting its own spin on the word “women” in a new experimental dance performance, starting Jan 25, at Now Theatre, Taman Sungei Besi in Kuala Lumpur.
The show called Women is a collaborative production supported by WuXu Dance Troupe and Han Fong Dance Ensemble and marks NDT’s first ever public performance.
Women is choreographed by NDT’s founder Nix Cheek, Matt Tan (WuXu Dance Troupe) and Valentina Song, a young choreographer from NDT. It features an ensemble of young dancers, including Chan Kar Kah, Ryn Mah, Hew Hui Wen, H‘ng Sheng Kai, Coco Lee, Chong Xe Yuin, Low Siah Shin, Shealy Tay, Claudia Ho YingYan, Ng Pei Yin, Daphne Yeoh, Brandon Leong, and Michael Ken.
“The spelling for women is the same as the romanisation of the Mandarin word for ‘us’ which is wo men. We are playing with the dual meanings of this word,” says producer Anjoey Chong, an amateur dancer and choreographer herself.
“Using the body as a tool, the dancers will be expressing the different perspectives and views of the words ‘women’ and ‘us’,” she continues.
This is no ordinary dance performance. In using video, photography and art installations, Women aims to break the boundaries between performer and the audience.
“Usually when you watch a dance show, you will be taking home a particular message from the dance. Women is more interactive and different audiences will get a different message from the same piece depending where you are seated,” says Chong.
Women comprises three dance pieces. Please Introduce Yourself by Tan is, as the title suggests, an interpretation of self-introduction. Song’s Creation is a tragic tale about overbearing and excessively protective parents. And Women by Cheek tackles the dual meaning of the word women.
NDT was founded by Cheek in 2017 to train a new generation of dancers in both contemporary and Chinese dances while also breaking traditional concepts with bold and experimental ideas.
Women plays at Now Theatre, Midfields Square West, B1-28-1, Jln 11/108C, Taman Sungai Besi in Kuala Lumpur from Jan 25 to 27. Ticket price is RM40. Call 013-388 9058 or 010-260 0386. FB: Noir Dance Theatre.
