In an exclusive interview with Throne Of Glass author Sarah J. Maas, we quiz her about her characters and the worlds she’s created.
Celaena Sardothien, the heroine of Throne Of Glass, and Fayre, the heroine of A Court Of Thorns And Roses, meet in a fight. What happens?
I don’t think they would get in a fight! I think they would be like: we’re both dealing with overbearing Fae warrior men, so let’s be allies and drive these men out of their minds!
In Court Of Thorns, characters live in Courts, such as the Day Court, the Spring Court and the Winter Court. Which Court would you choose to live in?
That’s a bit of a spoiler question! You find out so much more about the different Courts in A Court Of Mist And Fury [the sequel to Court Of Thorns]. So I don’t want to say where I’d like to go because I feel everyone will read into it! But I do have one in mind, and when you read the book, you might figure out which it is.
From Rhysand and Amarantha to Aelin Ashryver Galathynius and Nehemia Ytger, the characters in your fantasy series certainly have weird and wonderful names. How do you come up with them?
One thing I need to do before even writing someone into a story is to have their name – it’s a gateway for me into that character. Sometimes I’ll be lucky and just hear their name inside my head, and I just fiddle with a few of the letters.
Other times, I go on sites like babynames.com and type in things like “Celtic warrior names”. I like to play with meanings. I go to those sites and write out a list of all the names I like, and then do a process of elimination. If I don’t find a name I like, then I combine the names I have, and hopefully find something from there.
Sometimes, I’ll have little inside jokes from the fandoms that I’m into. For example, in Court Of Thorns there’s a character named Isaac Hale, whose name is a combination of two of my favourite characters from the [TV] show Teen Wolf! [Laughs.] So not an intellectual process on that one at all, just a little Easter Egg for me and my readers who know I like that show.
In your Court Of Thorns series, the Fae characters have the ability to take on animal forms. If you had this ability, which animal form would you pick?
A velociraptor! Or one of the Xenomorphs from Alien. Something horrible, with claws and teeth, that doesn’t care about anything but just does what it wants!
A Throne Of Glass question: You’re on a dating show, and your choices are Chaol, Dorian and Rowan. Who do you pick?
I’m not even going to touch that one. I know who I’d pick, but I don’t want to start a riot! I love all the guys in the books, so I’ll take all of them. They can all come home with me!
