Where better to spend a romantic getaway than paradise on earth? Cairns is one such place – a naturally beautiful haven for lovebirds.
With its alfresco cafes, restaurants, markets, relaxing spas and tranquil resorts, this Australian city in Queensland exudes a laid-back yet cosmopolitan vibe that will ignite that spark between lovers.
From a spectacular helicopter flight over the iconic Great Barrier Reef to unwinding on a pristine island resort, there is something special for every romantic.
In the heart of the city, Cairns Zoom & Wildlife Dome beckons with an interactive wildlife experience. Take a stroll with your significant other around the giant dome on an external platform. The signature Dome Climb enables couples to enjoy a gorgeous bird’s-eye view of the city with the mountains and ocean in the background.
Shop at Cairns Central
While in the city, be sure to visit the largest shopping centre in tropical North Queensland to pick up gifts for him and her. Cairns Central boasts over 180 stores, ranging from Myers to Target and a host of standalone boutiques.
With shopping done, enjoy a cuppa while enjoying each other’s company at one of the cafes here.
Romantic drive to Port Douglas
Hire a car and go on a self-drive from Cairns to Port Douglas. The drive – hugging the east coastline, with rainforest on one side and reef on the other – is one of the most scenic in the world. Take a detour to Rex Lookout for stunning views of Trinity Bay.
Port Douglas, a resort town, is great for indulging in food, swimming with marine life or just chilling out. Start the day by having breakfast with the birds at Port Douglas’ Wildlife Park Rainforest Habitat. Then hire a bike to ride along the famous Four Mile Beach, and soak up the sun.
On Sundays, check out Port Douglas’ local markets by the sea. The Sunday Market is a “Cotters Market”, where the goods offered for sale are locally made or grown.
For that romantic vibe, watch the sunset from the deck of a luxury catamaran on a relaxing 1.5-hour evening sailing cruise from Port Douglas. As you soak in the tropical scenery and enjoy a complimentary drink, your captain will steer your vessel to prime viewpoints for watching the sunset and the Coral Sea, the Low Isles and the gorgeous coastline around Port Douglas.
Stay at the QT Port Douglas boutique hotel – where staff dress in retro Hamptons clothes – for a touch of old-world romance. QT rooms sparkle with dazzling cushions and funky fittings.
Blissful Atherton Tablelands
Just an hour’s drive inland from Cairns is the Atherton Tablelands that’s rich with coffee plantations, tropical fruit wineries, dairy farms, plus chocolate and cheese factories. Be sure to sample some locally grown coffee at Coffee Works and check out the unique, refreshing Mango Wine at the Golden Pride winery.
Also take the time to explore the waterfalls, crater lakes and Yungaburra Curtain Fig Tree. Complete your Tablelands experience with some homemade scones at the historical Lake Barrine teahouse.
The region makes a great day trip or overnight stay in one of the many quaint Bed & Breakfast accommodations.
