SOME K-culture vultures might recognise Jang Da-hye – better known by her stage name Heize – as the pretty one on the second season of rap competition TV show Unpretty Rapstar.

The 26-year-old has come a long way since then, proving that she’s more than just a reality show star. The Daegu native has a knack for blending the grit of hip-hop with the commercial sensibilities of pop and R&B.

On third mini album ///(You, Clouds, Rain), Heize pedals forward with groovy melodies and smooth balladry. The results are tracks laced with pleasant instrumentals (Dark Clouds, Rainin’ With U) and rainy days soft tempo jazz-inspired sound (the duet with 4men’s Shin Yong-jae on You, Clouds, Rain).

Album opener and lead single Don’t Know You has the distinction of being the best track on this five-track collection. The laidback song flirts with hip-hop samples, acoustic piano and dance-worthy beats to make – as the cool kids call a good song these days – a bop. More than just a pretty face, Heize is also extremely easy on the ears.
