Planet Of The Apes storms into the cinema – no, not on the big screen, but on the walls of the Golden Screen Cinemas (GSC) at IOI City Mall in Putrajaya.
And it isn’t just the jungle beasts who are celebrated in this project.
Lovingly crafted in vibrant nature-inspired imagery and hues, graffiti artist and movie buff Kenji Chai has brought several other well-loved characters from titles such as Guardians Of The Galaxy and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles to life as well.
Pursuing his love of art, Kenji started out as a graphic designer, but soon came to the realisation that the computer felt too much like “a barrier between art and himself”.
The solution? He turned to graffiti art as a more direct artistic expression, so to say, and has not looked back since.
Across the country, GSC has, over the last couple of months, been working with graffiti artists to paint the town red by adorning their walls with movie characters.
Kenji is one of them.
Artist They, the first to come onboard this initiative last year, has been busy for months at GSC Nu Sentral in Kuala Lumpur with superstar Rajinikanth, Deadpool, Spider-man, Transformers, and everyone’s favourite secret agent, James Bond, just to name a few.
“Overall, a positive vibe, batik-inspired, and tropical colours. Very bright, energetic and vibrant, warm and relaxed and free,” They describes of his freewheeling, carefree graffiti style.
At GSC East Coast Mall in Kuantan, Pahang, illustrator and concept artist Arif Rafhan has brought his comic art aesthetics to bringing Toy Story, Star Wars, BoBoi Boy, Thor and Dr Strange to life.
And if the charmingly snarky Iron Man is your cup of tea, then check out Eki’s take on this superhero at GSC Aeon Bandaraya Melaka. Cute yellow Minions (Despicable Me series), popular anime Ghost In The Shell, and the rugged Terminator round up his subjects.
A mural and visual artist, he is a true believer in the mantra “quality means doing it right when nobody is looking.”
Well, now everybody is looking. And what a sight it truly is!
